A History of Cosmetics, Part 1

A History of Cosmetics, Part 1

It might seem like women’s make-up is a fairly modern social norm, but the practice of cosmetics is a really old concept. Here is some history behind why women are always having to wear make-up now.

With all the billions of dollars spent every year worldwide on cosmetics, sometimes we may find ourselves asking, “How did it get to this point? When did it become the norm for me to have to wake up every morning and before I even go out the door I get to paint my face from top to bottom? Surely a woman way back in history didn’t just wake up one day and apply eyelashes, lipstick, eyeliner, foundation, and rouge all at the same time. No, it was, like many things, a culmination of things from the past.
Remember the Egyptians? That was over four thousand years ago. Cleanliness and appearance were terribly important to the Egyptians. They believed the appearance was in direct link with the health of the soul. They strived to always look and smell good. And with a society who values their appearance, you’re inevitably going to have people who are going to make themselves stand out. But the Egyptians, being the innovative people they were, used cosmetics for reasons that were even smarter than just trying to look good.
Mesdemet was the earliest kind of eye shadow- a substance made of copper and lead ore. The dark shades they believed would ward off evil eyes to their own. It was also a great disinfectant and insect repellant. Kohl was a dark powder that was also applied around the eyes in an oval shape. It was a combination of lead, ash, ochre, copper, and burnt almonds. To further enhance their appearance, they would apply a mixture of water and red clay to the cheekbone area. They would also paint their nails colors of orange and yellow with a substance called henna.
As time moved on and cultures were exposed to each other more and more, the Greeks began to pick up on the many practices of the Egyptian’s use of cosmetics. They would give themselves a pale color with a foundation that contained lead in it. This proved fatal on more than one occasion. As the Romans began to pick up the cosmetics practice, the pursuit of beauty became much less about functionability and took a turn into much more exotic routes. The Romans would paint their nails with a combination of sheep’s blood and cooked body fat. An ancient Roman man once said, “A woman without paint is like food without salt.”

Taking great care of your facial skin is easy once you establish the right routine, and sticking to a regular cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing schedule can help you achieve a flawless, smooth complexion that glows with health. Every person’s skin is unique, so developing your facial care regimen will be likely to require some trial and error. Knowing thoroughly what different kinds of products do, and what your skin type needs, can help you create the ultimate skin care plan custom designed for your individual complexion.

The first thing to consider when choosing skin care products and coming up with your treatment plan is your skin type. If you often notice flaking, find your skin is easily irritated, or feel that you are prone to premature wrinkles, you probably have a dry skin type. If you are vulnerable to acne and blemishes, or find that you constantly need to powder your nose to keep shine at bay, you have an oily skin type. If, like many people, you have pimples and grease in some areas and irritation and flaking in others, you have combination skin, which usually requires the most individualized care.

Keep your skin type in mind when buying the four products that will make up your skin care routine. You will need a cleanser to use twice daily, an exfoliant to use a few times per week, a moisturizer to use as needed, and one intensive treatment for weekly use. The cleanser should wipe away dirt, makeup, and excess oil, and will keep your pores free of clogs. The exfoliant will slough away dead skin cells that can cloud your visage, and exfoliating will help keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant. The moisturizer will tackle dryness, redness, and irritation so that you can maintain a silky smooth texture and a fresh, dewy look. The intensive treatment should be a commercially available or homemade mask that will tackle your biggest skin problem.

For your cleanser, look for a product free from alcohol or other potentially drying agents, and choose the gentlest product possible. It should be strong enough to cut through excess grease, but not so strong that it strips your face of the natural oils that keep it resilient. Your exfoliant should be especially designed for facial skin, the most delicate skin on the body, so don’t try to make your body scrub do double duty on your face. The moisturizer you pick must be non-comedogenic to keep your complexion clear, and should be water based for maximum effectiveness. Use your moisturizer only when you notice redness or dryness. For people with dry skin this may mean applying a thin layer after every cleansing, but for others it might mean occasional spot treatments. Use a mask treatment once a week for a luxurious, deeply penetrating solution to your skin problems. You can find a mask recipe or premixed product for any issue under the sun, so whether your dominant skin trouble is acne, dryness, or visible wrinkles, or if your skin is in great shape but could use an infusion of nutrients, you will be able to find a treatment ideal for your skin.

Career Talk, The Dental Practice And What’s With All The Smiley Faces?

In this article we take a look at what all is involved in the typical day of a dentist or one who performs dental care. You’ll find reading this article much more enjoyable with frequent smiling! So, every time you see the smiley face that looks like this, (:-) it means smile and enjoy being you. Besides, that’s the whole point of the dental profession - to help you enjoy your white pearlies with smiling and laughter!

Keywords:

If you’re considering a career in the dental field this article is for you. (:-)

To begin we’ll give a quick overview of dental tasks, then mention some of the specialties you can pursue and finally we’ll look at the actions a person in the dental field takes within a typical day of working in other peoples mouths. (:-)

A dentist is a specialist who can diagnose, prevent and treat all disorders related to your teeth and gums. Dental care involves the restoration and preservation of your natural teeth, filling cavities, removing rotten teeth if necessary and providing artificial teeth replacement. Some dentists are general practitioners who work with preventative dentistry and use diagnostic procedures, X-rays and instruments to evaluate the condition of your teeth and gums. Dentists perform checkups, take impressions for dentures, fill cavities and fit bridges. They use a variety of dental appliances, hand instruments, and surgical implements to perform their work accurately. Giving anesthetics called numbing or freezing is also done by a dentist or a dental hygienist for those visits that will be quite painful. (:-)

The American Dental Association recognizes the following Dental specialties:
1) Oral surgeons
2) Periodontics (related with treating the gums)
3) Prosthodontics (making teeth or dentures)
4) Oral pathologist (treating diseases of the mouth)
5) Endodontics (root canal therapy)
6) Orthodontists (related with structure of teeth)
7) Dental hygienists (work with hygiene of oral cavity) 8) Maxillofacial surgeon

Phew! There’s allot of areas to study there, better have a (:-).

What Does a Dentist Do?
• Diagnose and treat malformations, injuries and diseases of the teeth and oral cavity.
• Dentists improve patient’s appearance by using various cosmetic dental processes and sometimes the help of surgical interventions.
• Dentists perform surgical procedures like tissue grafts, implants and extractions.
• Educate patients, mostly children on how to take care of their teeth and prevent cavities and oral diseases by showing how to floss and brush correctly and eat healthy foods. (:-)
• Dentists related with teaching field, teach dental hygienists and future dentists.
• Dentists perform research directed to developing new treatment methods and improving oral health.
• Dental hygienists work with patients alongside the dentist to perform allot of the routine and simpler tasks.

If you go to any dental practice, quite often the first person you’ll encounter is a dental hygienist. Make sure you give them a (:-).

Dental hygienists are specialists who take care of your teeth, gums and oral cavity. A dental hygienist will clean and polish your teeth using tiny dental tools such as the mirror, tooth scrapper for plaque removal and special toothbrush. They also perform flossing to remove very tiny food particles from your teeth. They’ll check your dental cavities by taking x-rays of your teeth. After checking your teeth for cavities, they’ll recommend the needed treatment to you and your dentist and may refer to a specialist if necessary.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my smiling dental care article! Maybe you won’t pursue the dental field, that’s okay with me. I’ll just be glad to know you smiled a pile (pun intended) and didn’t waste your time while reading. Have a Great (:-) day!!

Solving the Autism Problem

Solving the Autism Problem

A discussion of the latest therapies that have
been found to improve autism cases.

Keywords:
autism training, autism therapy, autism, neuroliminal, neurobiofeedback, EEG biofeedback, Dr Bate, subliminal messaging

There is no one therapy that does it all. And,
to complicate it further, like most “mental”
problems”, it’s not simple to diagnose. In the
younger ages, it’s easily confused with mental
retardation, or brain damage.

What are the known causes of autism? Perhaps the
best known today is the usage of mercury (
thimeroserol) in infant and childhood vaccines.
Only in the past few years was this practice
discontinued. So, we’ve literally poisoned
millions of children with good intent!
Protecting them from dangerous childhood diseases
has caused much worse problems.

Another well known cause of autism is food
sensitivity and allergy. Virtually every known
mental problem may be caused by a normally
harmless allergen - a simple food that has been ”
recognized” by that person’s immune system as ”
dangerous”.

This seems to be caused by what is called “leaky
gut syndrome”. A major theory in this cause is
that the malnourishment of the mother prior to
birth and during initial feeding after birth
opens the entrances from the gut too much in the
attempt to obtain more needed vitamins and
minerals and enzymes, etc.

This larger “leaky gut opening” allows larger ”
particles” thru the gut walls into the portal
vein. Instead of digested single amino acids, or
simple combinations of a few amino acids, longer
chains of amino acids are allowed thru. These
larger than “normal” collections of amino acids
may then be recognized by the immune system as
possible viruses, bacteria, or even parasites.
This particular collection of amino acids is now
a distinct allergen to that person, even though
it is actually harmless.

There are possibly many other minor causes and/or
combinations of causes. We know very little
about the evolution of our immune system, and how
allergy/sensitivity is developed.

What can we do to “normalize” autistic children?
What are the answers that we already know?

The Mercury Toxicity Problem

As a former orthomolecular psychologist, mineral
toxicity is well known to me. I’ve seen several
schizophrenic patients “cured” that suffered from
copper toxicity in particular.

The first step is diagnosis of this problem. Is
mineral toxicity involved? There are several
different ways to diagnose mineral toxicity. In
my opinion the best way is a mineral hair
analysis. Most MD’s prefer a 24 hour urine
collection. Actual blood tests and urine and
saliva tests are not reliable.

It seems that all toxic minerals are stopped from
getting into the brain by the filtering and
storage facility of the liver. A large amount of
mercury getting to the brain would be very
dangerous, so the liver stops it and stores it,
and then gradually releases as small an amount
back into the bloodstream so that it can be
excreted. Hair is an excretion route, and an
inch or so of hair tells a “history” of mineral
excretion over a period of weeks. While hair
analysis isn’t very accurate insofar as amount in
the body, it’s very accurate as to what’s been
excreted over time.

A hair analysis would be my first step towards
solving the autism problem.

Supposing that the hair analysis came back
showing large amounts of mercury. What to do
next? The answer is some form of chelation.

Chelation means “to grab onto”. There are
several drugs that do this for minerals. In the
blood stream, these drugs (EDTA and others)
literally grab onto minerals, and allow them to
exit the body thru the kidney/urine excretion
system. This usually involves going to a
chelation clinic, sitting for an hour or so with
a needle in the arm. It’s not that uncomfortable,
although a small child might find it so. This
procedure is done several times over a period of
several weeks.

. One problem with this is that because the
chelation agent (drug) “claws onto” all minerals
in the blood stream, it takes out essential
minerals as well as the toxic ones. So, it
becomes very necessary to supplement the minerals
our bodies need for everyday use. In effect,
taking all out, good and bad, and putting back
the good.

It’s also not cheap, as it involves “doctor time”.

I successfully used a cheap and effective
alternate in my practice. Vitamin C. Vitamin C
combines with minerals in the bloodstream
metabolically to form a mineral “Ascorbate”
combination that is also water soluble and passes
out thru the same kidney/urine exit.

There are several advantages to using Vitamin C
instead of drugs. It is a natural antibiotic
that kills both viruses and bacteria in the
bloodstream. So, people who use it will be
healthier than most, AND they’ll be getting rid
of toxic minerals at the same time.
The same thing happens as does with drugs. Since
vitamin C combines with ALL minerals, we are
taking out the essential ones along with the
toxic ones. So, all the essential ones must be
supplemented daily.

Few people realize the truth about vitamin C
today, in spite of the work done by Linus Pauling,
a true genius. The “spin” by nutritionists and
MD’s and the RDA has us taking very insufficient
amounts of vitamin C for daily use. Did you know
that the veterinarian RDA for a 150 pound ape is
4000 mg (4 grams) per day? We humans and other
primates such as that ape handle vitamin C
exactly the same. The RDA is under 100 mg (0.1
gram).

For schizophrenic adults I worked with in past
years, I used 10 grams per day in split doses.
For these patients, their schizoid symptoms
seemed to disappear within two weeks or so, but
surprisingly, a six month hair analysis showed
even high levels of copper. Carl Pfeiffer, a
mentor, and a good friend, explained that the
body is now allowing more toxic material out of
storage into the bloodstream so that it can be
excreted safely. Most goes out via the kidney/
urine pathway, but also hair. To my surprise,
this increase in hair levels was actually good.

Allergy/Sensitivity Problem

The “leaky gut syndrome” is becoming a huge
health problem, albeit unknown to most people and
even most physicians. It’s a function of our
culture moving more and more away from healthful
foods containing good nutrition and moving more
and more to sweet and pre-processed foods without
good balanced nutrition.

Because we have evolved requiring certain amounts
and balances of vitamins, minerals, amino acids,
fatty acids, and enzymes derived from what we eat,
we, as a culture are not getting even close to
sufficient nutrition for good health without
taking vitamin mineral supplements. One theory
of “leaky gut syndrome” is that each generation,
being malnourished, has to find a way to get more
necessary nutrients, and allowing more amino
acids and other needed nutrients thru the walls
of the intestines, this is accomplished.

There are several possible answers to this
particular problem:

1. Giving the person with the problem digestive
enzymes. This helps the digestive system do a
better job, breaking up proteins into amino acids
easier to digest as small peptides and individual
amino acids. This solves part of the problem at
least, especially in those cases where digestive
problems are present. Of course, protease is the
most desired.

2. Avoiding those foods that are most likely the
allergens that the immune system has “decided”
are enemies. This is the basis of the milk free
and gluten free diets that are popular, and have
proved of value for some autistic cases.

3. Allergy search and solution. The only really
effective “test and cure” system is the End-
Point-Titration method. This not only finds both
allergies and sensitivities, but also provides a
neutralizing amount. Unfortunately, the costs
are prohibitive, ranging in the tens of thousands
of dollars. A free allergen test may be found at
Free
Allergy Test

4. EEG Biofeedback (aka Neurofeedback or
Neurotherapy) has long been used with ADD/ADHD
successfully. Dr von Hilsheimer in Orlando has
successfully worked with several autistic
children using this therapy. He has taken well
over 200 sessions with several patients. The
problem is that it is very expensive and uses a
lot of “doctor time”.

5. A new therapy called Neuroliminal Brain Wave
Training was invented by me in 2004. It does
exactly what EEG Biofeedback does, namely change
brain wave strengths (and in the case of autism
patients, increases brain blood flow (similar to
HEG biofeedback).
Besides being as successful as EEG BF, it
actually has several other advantages for autism
cases:

a. Very affordable cost - a fraction of EEG BF,
a viable alternative to the dangerous drugs used
for the ADD-autism continuum. Mid and low income
families simply cannot afford EEG BF, leaving the
only real choice the dangerous drugs.

b. Very simple to use at home. No messing
around with wires and sticky paste or even bulky
helmets. Even the “worst” autistic kids can be
trained without problems.

c. No motivation required to simply go to sleep.
With ADD/ADHD and high functioning autistics,
motivation is a critical factor in success.

In a recent test of 9 autistic children from 3 to
11 years of age, over an eight week period, ALL
nine improved, some dramatically, and some slowly.
This is exactly what would be expected if using
EEG and HEG BF. All parents put up a $100
deposit, and if no improvement was found, they
could get that back. All preferred to keep it
and continue training.

Those are the options I see at present. Autism
is increasing as our nutrition is decreasing, and
more and more toxins are used for good reasons
that have bad effects.

If I had a child who was autistic, or even slow
to develop, what would I do?

1. Start Neuroliminal Brain Wave Training
immediately.

2. I’d do a hair analysis to see if mercury is
at toxic levels, and if so, I’d start my child on
5-10 grams of vitamin C per day.

3. I’d try a Caveman Diet for a week or so to
try to determine if common allergens such as milk
or grains are a major culprit.

4. I’d investigate digestive enzymes for autism
on the web, and start using them.

The belt and suspender theory seems to me to be
the best way - do all that you can as soon as you
know about the problem and possible solutions.
The sooner the autistic child is started on these
programs the closer to “normal” they usually
become.

There is no magic pill. All these programs take
time. Magic pills usually aren’t anyway, and all
drugs have serious side effects for some at least.
What I have outlined does not in any way.
Unfortunately, the physician’s dictum “do no harm”
is no longer the case.

Laser Hair Removal - Treatment for Permanent Hair Removal

Learn about Permanent Hair Removal and what laser treatment is required to is needed to rid yourself of unwanted hair. 3 different hair growth cycle stages are explained as well as how effective laser treatment is in each of these stages.

The desire for permanent hair removal in both men and women has created a worldwide craze - Laser Hair Removal. People are queuing up at clinics around the world hoping for the miracle cure to rid themselves permanently of hair in undesirable places. But for permanent hair reduction, the bare reality is that it is very rare that just one session of laser treatment will give the desired result. And here’s why:

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent ?

Some say YES, some say NO. Studies show that the best-known method of achieving permanent hair removal is Laser Hair Removal, and if the procedure is performed correctly (using the right equipment), permanency is definitely possible. That’s because laser hair removal actually kills the hair follicle, which impairs it’s ability to grow. But you need to get the hair at the right stage in the growth cycle to ensure permanent hair removal, which means that you will need to undergo a number of treatments.

You see, hair grows in 3 stages, and Laser treatment in the first growth stage (Anagen stage) is the best for permanent reduction. Laser treatment in the other 2 stages (Categen and Telogen) can be less effective, because in these stages new hairs are being formed which may not be target-able by the Laser. So for permanency you will need to undergo a number of laser treatments over time to kill all the hair follicles in that region.

Which Growth Stage is Best for Permanent Hair Removal ?

Everyone’s hair grows differently, depending on their age, weight, metabolism, hormonal interactions, genetics, medications and environmental influences. Irrespective of this, hair grows in a cycle which has 3 distinct stages, and the ability of the Laser to target and destroy the hair follicle actually depends on the stage of the hair in the growth cycle. That is because the Lasers used in hair removal actually target the pigment in the hair to “zero in” on the hair follicle. In the initial growth stage of hair, there is more pigment in the hair, thus the Laser is more effective.

Following is an overview of the 3 different hair growth cycle stages, and how effective laser treatment is in each of these stages:

The ACTIVE or ANAGEN growth phase (lasts 2-6 years), comprises approximately 85 % of our body hair at any given moment in time. During this ANAGEN phase, the hair shaft and follicle has an abundance of pigment and is most sensitive to the laser light. So in this stage, permanent hair removal is very likely. The Laser will destroy the hair follicle and no new hair will grow.

The REGRESSIVE or CATAGEN phase (lasts 1-2 weeks) is the period during which the hair stops actively growing but is not shed. This phase often lasts several weeks comprising about 3 - 4% of our total body hair at any given time. In the early part of this stage, you can expect the same results as in the ANAGEN stage. But later in this stage, a new hair might already be forming, and because it will have no pigment yet, it won’t be destroyed.

The RESTING or TELOGEN phase lasts 5 - 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time. Again, the new hair will not have any pigment and the laser will not be able to target it. This new hair will shortly enter the ANAGEN stage, and if it is exposed to a Laser treatment when it has entered the ANAGEN stage, then permanency can be expected.

In summary, each hair on your body will naturally be at a different part of the growth cycle, and that is why it will be necessary in most cases to undergo a number of Laser hair Removal treatments at varying intervals to completely destroy all hair follicles in the region you are targeting. You might be lucky and destroy more than 85% of the hair follicles in the target region with just one treatment, but the statistics point towards needing at least 2 treatments (possibly 3 or more) to totally destroy all hair follicles in any part of the body.

Beauty consciousness and Stretch Marks

Almost all human beings are conscious about their beauty and they adopt all means to improve or maintain it. The quality of skin is having priority in the field of beauty care. Skin is considered as the mirror of the human body and it reflects the physical, mental and emotional status of every person.

The number of people attending beauty clinics and dermatologists is increasing day by day. Even though skin diseases are having low mortality, people are worried about skin problems because of the social stigma. A person having a disease of some internal organ may not be worried but another person having a skin disease on the face may be depressed because of the simple reason ‘others will come to know about my disease’.

Human skin has got several functions like protection, heat regulation, water balance, excretion etc. It gives protection and support to the deep body tissues and has got the ability to stretch to some extent due to the presence of protein fibers in the dermis. But too fast enlargement of the body parts cause excessive stretching on the skin resulting in breaking of collagen and elastin fibers of the dermis. This causes slightly depressed discoloration called stria atrophia or stretch marks. Initially these marks are slightly pinkish and later become white or silvery in appearance.

Stretch marks are found in conditions like pregnancy, puberty, obesity etc. It is usually seen in places like abdomen, thighs, breasts, buttocks, shoulders etc. Once these marks appear, time is required for them to be less prominent.

Both men and women are the victims of stretch marks but it mainly affects women due to their beauty consciousness and causes psychological trauma leading to depression. On the other hand there are women who are least bothered to get rid of stretch marks and consider them as a badge of mother hood. Still the number of people visiting clinics to remove stretch marks is increasing day by day. Because of the increasing need for the stretch mark treatment modalities, there are number of products in the market to deal with stretch marks cure. But most of those products are not proved effective scientifically but few of them give results in many cases. Modern treatment methods like plastic surgery and laser surgery for stretch marks have been proved effective in the treatment.

Little Changes that Can Make a Big Difference

Your body requires certain nutrients to rebuild itself. It requires certain enzymes, vitamins and minerals to ensure that the rebuilding process is done properly. There are a few small steps you can take immediately to improve the health and appearance of your skin and hair.

Dietary Changes

Your body requires certain nutrients to rebuild itself. It requires certain enzymes, vitamins and minerals to ensure that the rebuilding process is done properly. There are a few small steps you can take immediately to improve the health and appearance of your skin and hair. Skin repairs itself at a pretty rapid pace, so you can expect to see improvements within a month of adding the following to your diet:

· Vitamin/Mineral Supplement: Begin immediately by adding a good multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement to your daily diet.

· Antioxidants: Add an antioxidant supplement (A, E, C, selenium or equivalent).

· Oils: Replace your salad oil with olive oil immediately, and change your cooking oil to coconut oil. (Polyunsaturated fats like canola and soybean oil commonly used today oxidize at a lower temperature – this means that they throw off free radicals at body temperature, which cause cellular damage and accelerate aging.)

· Vegetables: If you aren’t already, add at least one very large serving of dark leafy green vegetables, one serving of yellow vegetables and one of dark red vegetables per day. This will add important enzymes, phytonutrients, minerals and fiber. The easiest way to do this is to insist on one large salad of romaine and RIPE tomato with carrots to nibble on the side – and don’t forget to use olive oil for dressing. A squeeze of lemon goes nicely with this, and the combination of olive oil and lemon helps balance liver enzyme function as well.

· Eggs: Protein is vital to cellular regeneration. Although carbohydrates can give you energy, and in the long run your body can use vegetable proteins to synthesize human proteins, only eggs contain every single amino acid necessary to rebuild human cells. Unless you are allergic, add one or two eggs to your menu every day. You can hard boil and chop it over that salad.

· Yogurt: In addition to the protein it adds, yogurt also adds calcium and important digestive enzymes to your diet. Add at least one serving of live-culture yogurt daily. It’s cheap, it tastes good and it’s good for you – what more can you ask for? Full fat yogurt is preferable, since the low-fat kind is usually filled with food starch for texture and adds empty calories. Avoid the kind with lots of added sugar if you can, since sugar has little to no real long-term nutritional value.

Hydration

Your body requires adequate water to move nutrients and enzymes throughout the body. One of the first habits you need to develop is drinking at least a 32 to 64 ounces of clean water daily.

Sleep

Although it’s hard to find, adequate sleep is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your appearance. You body spends most of your sleeping hours regenerating itself, rebuilding cells, balancing hormone levels and brain chemicals. Adequate sleep will not only help you look good, it will help you feel good as well. Neurochemicals that control mood and pain levels are produced during sleep, which is why so many chronic pain patients are found to have an underlying sleep disorder. So, even if you are not the raving beauty you wished you were, proper mood can lead to proper perspective, and at least it won’t bother you as much. There is, of course, no such thing as perfect, and there’s nothing like a good night sleep to put those nagging doubts and insecurities into perspective.

· Adequate Sleep: Make a habit of getting enough sleep. Most experts claim seven to nine hours per day is the required amount. Some experts say that setting the total amount of sleep to coincide with the natural 90 minutes per sleep cycles is best. This would mean either 7.5 or 9 hours of sleep per night. Five cycles would mean 7.5 hours, six cycles would be nine hours of sleep. Try experimenting with setting your clock for either 7.5 OR 9 hours, depending on your schedule, so that you can complete each and every sleep cycle naturally. On the other hand, if you find that 8 hours or 8.5 hours is what makes you feel best, by all means, do what works for you.

· Napping: Make a habit of grabbing naps. Humans were meant to take naps. That’s why those of us who are permitted to live according to our normal biological cycle (babies, small children and the elderly) take naps. Humans are designed to nap during the afternoon. Current studies show a natural rise and fall of hormones that indicate a programmed “nap” time in the afternoon. That famous mid-afternoon slump isn’t just lack of sleep at night, or a heavy lunch, or stress or overwork – it’s your instincts kicking in and telling you to take a few hours of down-time. Take a nap during the weekend if you can. Instead of sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday, get up at your normal time and then take a two hour nap in the early afternoon. Your body will thank you. And hey, if all you end up doing is resting in a cool room with your eyes closed and clearing your mind, that’ll help too.

New Technology Brings Improved Diagnosis of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans. According to the American Heart Association, more than 13 million Americans are affected and, when diagnosing heart disease, using the best medical imaging technology available is crucial.

Until recently, diagnosing heart disease was difficult without a costly and invasive surgical procedure, especially for patients with little or no history of a heart condition.

But now, new medical imaging technology has vastly improved the area of computed tomography or CT scanning, which renders 3-D images of internal parts of the body, including the heart, brain and other organs, to make noninvasive diagnoses of heart disease and even stroke faster and more accurate.

As with most medical imaging procedures, image quality is key. If the scanned image does not clearly represent all the minute details, the diagnosis may not be as accurate. And today’s latest CT technology allows doctors to not only see things they’ve never seen before, meaning patients are getting the most accurate diagnosis possible, but also conduct faster exams on critically ill patients who might find it difficult to remain still for long periods of time.

For instance, the new Toshiba Aquilion 32 CFX multislice CT system is currently the industry’s finest resolution scanner available for cardiovascular imaging, producing 32 slices of detailed images as thin as .5 millimeters.

Using this new equipment, a detailed three-dimensional image is produced to allow doctors to see the heart from virtually any angle, which results in greater confidence in diagnosing heart diseases and abnormalities.

Inevitably, better diagnosis leads to better treatment. As we become more aware of the dangers of heart disease, we should also be aware of the medical technology available to our doctors. If you have the option of seeing a doctor with access to the latest medical imaging technology versus another doctor with access to dated technology, which one would you prefer?

You can be a better-informed patient. Ask your doctor about the quality of the imaging equipment on which you will be scanned.

All There Is About Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is, technically speaking, epilation by laser or with the use of a special light. Besides the body, certain types of laser hair removal may safely be used to reduce facial hair as well. The laser (or light) of a particular wavelength is used to cause damage to dark elements in hair follicles. These elements are referred to as chromophores. They can be artificially produced or naturally occurring.

Today, most techniques target naturally occurring chromophores, in particular, melanin. Melanin gives colour to both hair and skin. Of the former, there are two types: eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin gives a brown or black colour. The latter gives a blonde or red colour. Since the dark matter in hair follicles are the target, only the former - darker - type of hair is suitable for this procedure.

While laser hair removal became a commercial cosmetic procedure about 10 years ago, it has been experimented with well before then. In fact, medical lasers have been used to remove dark spots, acne scars, other types of skin blemishes and even tattoos. The point about laser hair removal is that, it’s not permanent. In fact, in countries like the U.S., the FDA prohibits the advertisement of FDA-approved laser treatments to be described as a method of “permanent removal”. Hence, use of the term “permanent reduction” or laser hair reduction to describe the procedure.

A more realistic description of laser hair removal is the “permanent reduction” of hair. It should be noted that, it’s sometimes required to have multiple sessions of laser treatment over a certain period of time to achieve this goal. There is also no guarantee that ALL of the hair in the area treated will be reduced. To actually guarantee genuine permanent hair removal is to risk genuine scarring.

Ideally, the first thing the individual should do is to consult a qualified dermatologist. They should be able to advise on the suitability of the procedure. In any event, results will be most noticeable on light skinned individuals with dark hair. A lot more care will need to be taken, if the procedure is done on darker skinned and/or tanned individuals.

What you should be careful about
As noted above, one is well advised to avoid establishments that make false claims. The following are some of the more popular ones:
There is absolutely no pain or it’s virtually painless. It is for many without needing any relief from the pain, but not for everyone.
The safe, permanent removal of hair. Again, the safe goal is hair reduction. Permanent removal is possible with scarring.
No re-growth of hair whatsoever. To date, there has been no real, genuine, qualified and objective evidence to support this claim.
It’s “laser electrolysis” or “lasertrolysis”. Hair reduction via electrolysis is completely different from reduction via the use of a laser. Both have their pros and cons, in terms of suitability and effectiveness.
In the end, it’s best to consult a qualified dermatologist first.
